This incredible Empire/very early Victorian, mahogany dresser has the qualities seen on pieces made by J & J Meeks. The artistic use of the dramatic mahogany veneers throughout the case is extremely noteworthy. The shapely ogee, oval, pivoting mirror is accented with bold carvings. The square tapered posts are connected with a very unique top frame. Notice how the mirror rests on a “U” shaped platform that has 4 drawers with curved fronts. The 2 end drawers have replaced wooden knobs. The inset white marble top is original. Below is an ogee shaped drawer. The drawer lacks its lock. Two more hand dovetailed drawers follow having a complicated moulded outer frame, original working locks and original pulls. Check out the lower base moulding which is actually a slipper drawer. Notice how this also has a lock which is extremely unusual for slipper drawers. The dresser rests on shaped, carved bracket feet. Every inch of this dresser has choice highly figured mahogany. There are some small veneer chips scattered throughout, but nothing that is offensive or distracting. The finish is in excellent condition having the deepest and richest color.
