This tall cherry chest of drawers is a wonderful example of Pennsylvania country Sheraton furniture. I can't help it-I love this piece! You should look closely so you can appreciate all of its unique detailing. First of all, it is solid cherry and still retains its original finish. The use of ebonized cockbeading and fine inlay along the cornice is so cool. The ebonized cockbeading is continued around each drawer edge. There is a narrow panel with a carved acanthus leaf on the outside of the 3 small drawers. Below are 5 more long drawers which graduate in size. On either side are uniquely turned and carved half columns with carved Doric capitals. All the hand dovetailed drawers retain their original glass pulls, brass key escutcheons and working locks. The sides of the chest have 2 recessed panels. The tall turned feet rest on casters. The casters were probably added later. The back of the tall chest is beautifully chamfered and cool as well! The vernacular or country Sheraton chest is a treat to own and one of my favorites.
