This dramatic bird’s eye maple chest of drawers is from the Empire period and has many unique features. The dresser has a boldly designed backsplash which accentuates the bird’s eye grain of the wood. Below are 2 small drawers with ogee shaped fronts and an unusual locking center drawer followed by three larger drawers. Notice how the bottom drawer steps out from the two above. All the drawers are finely hand dovetailed and having their original working locks and original glass knobs. The dresser has dramatically “S” shaped pilasters on the front corners and boldly designed curvaceous feet. The sides are recessed paneled. The strong bird’s eye maple graining is evident throughout. The drawers open and close smoothly. The finish is in excellent condition having a very warm and desirable color. There are expected rubs and marks on the finish but nothing that distracts the eye. What a commanding piece of Classical Empire furniture.
