This impressive grandfather or tall case clock was made by the highly regarded Seth Thomas Clock Co. What makes this clock stand out is not only the grand case and maker but that it retains its original striking bell system which is an unusual feature. The clock works, pendulum, weights, face and case are all original. The 8-day works require winding once a week and is in excellent running condition. All of our clocks are oiled, serviced and guaranteed to be in working condition. This particular Seth Thomas movement uses the soft sound of the bells to strike every quarter hour. At each full hour, the clock strikes the full Westminster chime sound using the bells and then it is followed by a gong striking out the actual hour. The clock has a beautiful sound and tone. The face has an ornately gilded brass face; a silvered dial with raised brass numerals; and a sweep seconds hand with a hand painted revolving moon dial. The moon dial rotates, eventually displaying the phases of the moon and changing scenery. The clock comes with its winding key. The solid mahogany case displays an arched top bonnet with a boldly carved crest and 2 finials. There appears to have been a center finial originally which is no longer present. This does not detract from its grandeur. Notice the finely carved ionic capitals on either side of the clock face door and the door to the weights and pendulum. Both doors retain their original working locks and keys. There is a boldly carved wide moulding between the doors. The sides of the upper part of the clock or bonnet have a lovely pierced carved oval design. Notice the use of multiple panes of beveled glass on the front door and side panels, which is unusual. The clock base has boldly carved acanthus leaves and rests on bracket feet accented with additional carved acanthus leaves. The finish is original and in excellent condition having the richest color and very desirable patina. What a statement this will make in any home or office.
