This English mahogany and rosewood work or sewing stand is extremely unusual and of great quality. Originally such stands were used to store letter writing or sewing implements and items. Its size and design would also work well as an end or side table. The top is comprised of two lids which are hinged and open up to reveal 2 red leather implement holders. There is a central storage well lined in a matching red silk. This would hold yarn or fabric. There is also a sliding compartment with 2 divided cubbies for additional storage. When fully opened, the top measures 26.5” wide. The lids are supported by heavy duty cast brass hinges and have its original lock as well. Notice the dramatic rosewood graining on the inside and outside of the lids. Also, the top has a delicately reeded edge. The skirt below and the well or storage compartment is also rosewood. The stand rests on delicately tapered legs. The simplicity of the design, richness of the wood grain and attention to detail make this a standout! The finish appears original and is in excellent condition having the richest color and patina.
