Amazingly, this cast iron fire screen retains its original handpainted surface!  These screens were popular in the Victorian period and were designed to shield a person's face from the heat of the fire while seated close by.  The oval metal panel measures 23.5" tall by 19" wide.  Behind the panel is an adjustable thumbscrew that allows you to move the panel up or down, depending on the desired height when seated.  The hand painting of a bouquet of flowers resting in a vase is exquisite.  There is only very minor loss.  The tri-foot iron base has a gold handpainted design on each leg.  The screen is extremely sturdy.  Notice the original dainty finial at the top.  It is rare to find such an early Victorian painted fire screen in this kind of condition.  This is the ultimate accessory in any Victorian parlor.
