This silk and velvet crazy quilt has wonderfully embroidered stitches and designs. Each corner has a silk fan pattern with an embroidered decoration such as a butterfly; sprigs of flowers and the initial “J”. There are also other unusual hand stitched designs throughout such as a landscape scene with a gate and house; a profile of a woman wearing a bonnet and a snowflake design to name a few. Upon close inspection, I counted 12 small patches in which the silks have frayed or deteriorated. This is extremely common and represents less than 10% of the over 1300 individual pieces of silks and velvets. The quilt has a red silk border. The back is a black and grey silk fabric with a batting between, all of which is in excellent condition. What a beautiful example of a Victorian lady’s handiwork.
